چکیده

We describe the technical details behind a novel voicebased human-computer interface designed to enable individuals with motor impairments to use vocal parameters for both discrete and continuous control tasks. Since discrete spoken commands are not ideally suited to such tasks, our methodology exploits a large set of continuous acoustic-phonetic parameters like pitch, loudness, vowel quality, etc. Their selection is optimized with respect to automatic recognizability, communication bandwidth, learnability, suitability, and ease of use. These parameters are extracted continually in real time, transformed via adaptation and acceleration, and converted into continuous control signals.

The Vocal Joystick Demo at UIST05: A Voice-Based Human-Computer Interface

We will demonstrate a novel voice-based human-computer interface we call the Vocal Joystick (VJ), designed to enable individuals with motor impairments to use vocal parameters for both discrete and continuous control tasks. Since discrete spoken commands are not ideally suited to such tasks, our methodology exploits a large set of continuous acoustic-phonetic parameters like pitch, loudness, vo...

Voice or Gaze? Comparative Evaluation of Vocal Joystick and Eye Tracker

In this work, we present the results of our comparative evaluation of the Vocal Joystick system and the Eye Tracker system. Vocal Joystick is a non-verbal voice-based continuous mouse cursor control system that offers an alternative method of computer interaction for people with motor impairments. Our goal was to gain an understanding for how this system compares to an existing assistive techno...

The Vocal Joystick: Evaluation of Voiced-based Cursor Control Techniques

Mouse control has become a crucial aspect of many modern day computer interactions. This poses a challenge for individuals with motor impairments or those whose use of hands are restricted due to situational constraints. We present a system called the Vocal Joystick which allows the user to continuously control the mouse cursor by varying vocal parameters such as vowel quality, loudness and pit...

An Empirical Evaluation of a Vocal User Interface for Programming by Voice

Although Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) often improve usability, individuals with physical disabilities may be unable to use a mouse and keyboard to navigate through a GUI-based application. In such situations, a Vocal User Interface (VUI) may be a viable alternative. Existing vocal tools (e.g., Vocal Joystick) can be integrated into software applications; however, integrating an assistive te...

The GP-LVM for Vocal Joystick Control

The Vocal Joystick (VJ) is an assistive device that uses the rich complexity of the human voice to drive a human-computer interface. The system has previously been shown to work well for control of a computer mouse, yet it does not currently make full use of the continuous nature of the vowel space. This work examines the potential use of the Gaussian process latent variable model (GP-LVM), whi...
